The
Wimbledon Championships
The Lawn Tennis Championships at Wimbledon have developed
from the garden party atmosphere of the first meeting in
1877, witnessed by a few hundred spectators, to a highly
professional tournament attracting an attendance of around
450,000 people and through the press, radio, Internet and
television a following of millions throughout the world.
The Tournament starts each year six weeks before the first
Monday in August and lasts for a fortnight or for as long as
necessary to complete all events. Players from over 60
nations regularly compete.
Over 6,000 people attend The Championships in a working
capacity. These include a temporary staff of several hundred
who are directly employed by The All England Lawn Tennis
Club and others who are provided by firms, contractors,
voluntary bodies and public services as well as
representatives of the media. In short, during the Fortnight
at the end of June and the beginning of July, the Club is a
hive of activity, squarely in the eye of the sporting world.

Demand for Wimbledon
tickets has for decades exceeded supply. As long ago as 1924
the Club introduced a public ballot whereby a number of
Centre, No.1 and No.2 Court tickets are sold in advance.
Many tickets are also sold through The Lawn Tennis
Association to their affiliated tennis clubs, schools,
membership scheme and to foreign tennis associations.
Wimbledon remains one of the very few major UK sporting
events for which one can still buy premium tickets on the
day. Each day approximately 500 Centre (not the last 4
days), No.1 and No.2 Court tickets are specifically reserved
for sale at the turnstiles. Ground tickets may also be
purchased on the day of play on every day of The
Championships, although visitors may have to queue for
tickets.
|
|
|
Queuing Information
A limited number of
tickets are retained for sale on the day of play to those
people queuing at the Ground. There are two queues for the
turnstiles at Gate 3, one from the north and one from the
south. Each queue has an equal allocation of tickets for
Centre Court, No. 1 Court, No. 2 Court and Ground Admission.
Please note that the queues can be extremely long.
Wristbands, marked by court and with a detachable 'court'
tally, will be offered to queuers according to the number of
show court tickets available. On reaching the entrance
kiosk, the tally must be detached and handed to the cashier
who will issue one ticket for the court on the tally. Please
note that tickets are sold on the basis of one per person
queuing and payment is by cash only.
|
Joining the Queue
Substantial queues form for the daily allocation of tickets.
For a ground pass it is usually necessary to join the queue
several hours before the grounds open. For a show court
ticket, many people choose to queue overnight to maximise
their chances of being able to purchase a ticket for Centre,
No.1 or No.2 Court. However, the Club is under considerable
pressure from neighbours and the police to discourage
excessive queuing, especially overnight, and the queue is
requested to minimise disruption by not causing health &
safety risks by, for example, blocking the pavements (so
that passers-by have to walk in the road) or by burning
barbecues.
